Many things: Decay at the gumline can be caused by bacteria, plaque, dry mouth, some medications and other factors. Discuss possible causes with your dentist or md for guidance in what can be done based on your specific diet, medications and oral hygiene.

In some cases, GERD: Or gastroesophageal reflux disease can weaken the enamel which is thinnest in the cervical (neck) part of the teeth, therefore, makes the second layer, dentin (softer than enamel) susceptible to decalcification caused by acid. If oral hygiene is compromised, it will be like adding insult to the injury due to the proliferation of bacteria, hence, the rotting of the exposed area of the teeth.
