DSM Definition: It's different than anxiety which is preceded by chronic stressors which build to reactions of moderate intensity that can last for days, weeks or months, panic attacks are acute events triggered by a sudden, out-of-the-blue cause: duration is short and symptoms are more intense. You can have both. It can be very severe and painful, but it is quite treatable w/ cbt and some think ssri's help.

Panic & agoraphobia: Panic disorder with agoraphobia is a type of anxiety disorder.  In it there are discrete episodes of intense fear peaking within 10 min and dissipating within 30 min. Also there is fear of situations which might be hard to escape or where help may not be available --also fear of crowds, bridges & being outside alone. Panic includes physical sx like shortness of breath, tachycardia, chest pain, etc.

There may be a tickle sensation in the stomach or nausea, feeling dizzy or faint ; physical shaking. The person may fear that they are going crazy, they are out of control or that.

Sxs: Panic attacks can develop rapidly and can include: marked anxiety; rapid, pounding heart beat; chest tightness or pain; shortness of breath with hyperventilation; hot or cold flashes; a sense of butterflies in the stomach, nausea or even vomiting;  tingling of mouth or extremities; increased sweating; feeling faint or lightheaded; headache, shaking; difficulty swallowing or throat tightness; a &gt;&gt;.

May not be panic: "flashing vision" is not a typical symptom of panic attacks.  I suggest considering other possibilities, such as migraine aura or other.  Please tell your physician you're having these symptoms. You may need to see a neurologist for further investigation.

Never seen this : I have never seen a true panic disorder patient complained of this in practice in 30 years. I have read the references to this on various websites. The more educated websites do recommend that the person being evaluated for ocular migraine. And for retinal tears. Migraine aura is another possibility. This type of experience is not listed in any of the standard reference criteria for panic attacks by the agencies that determine definitions of conditions such as panic disorder.I have never read it in any of the work by dr. David sheehan that this can occur in panic also.He is the one that initially defined panic disorder. He remains active in the field way in to "so-called"retirement.

what is better for panic attacks, clinidium and chlordiazepoxide or clonazepam? my panic attacks have to do usually about stomach issues or nausea.

Ginger: I am side stepping your direct question. If your stomach problems & nausea trigger your panic attacks - why not get right to the GI issues. Have your tried ginger? Ginger tea, ginger capsules, crystallized ginger? It is wonderful for reducing nausea & upset GI tract.  If you calm the storm in you gut - you may have much less need for anxiolytics. Take care.
