DSM Definition: It's different than anxiety which is preceded by chronic stressors which build to reactions of moderate intensity that can last for days, weeks or months, panic attacks are acute events triggered by a sudden, out-of-the-blue cause: duration is short and symptoms are more intense. You can have both. It can be very severe and painful, but it is quite treatable w/ cbt and some think ssri's help.

Panic disorder: Is a form of anxiety disorders which presents with sudden onset of intense fear that triggers physical symptoms for no apparent reason. You feel like losing control, having heart attack or dying. Most attacks go away if stress is removed. Treatment is Cognitive therapy & Medications.
