Need antibiotics: People who have tests that show they have strep throat need antibiotics to cure their infection and to prevent a complication called rheumatic fever, which can occur with untreated group a streptococcus infections. You need to be tested to make sure you do have strep throat, then your provider needs to find an antibiotic that works against strep that you are not allergic to.

See below: In penicillin allergic patients with streptococcal pharyngitis the macrolides-erythromycin, biaxin (clarithromycin) or zithromax as well as Clindamycin are effective.  If the penicillin allergy was only a rash and not immediate hypersensitivity cephalosporin antibiotics are safe and effective.

Virus, not strep?: The large majority of pharyngitis (sore throat) is viral, and no antibiotic works against viruses. Lack of improvement on levofloxacin (Levaquin®) is evidence it wasn't strep to begin with, or that it was strep plus a virus. This should continue to clear up on its own. Check with your doctor if it continues more than another few days.

i was prescribed z-pak for strep throat as i am allergic to penicillin. i finished my medication today. i also take 40 mg of escitalopram for anxiety. i took escitalopram 4-6 hours after i took my antibiotic. should i be concerned? i ended treatment?

: These medications can be prescribed to the patient and some of them may need monitoring while being on the treatment. But generally they are tolerated well. I hope you are feeling better.

: If you are allergic to augmentin you are likely allergic to penicillin. Yes, you can take azithromycin or erythromycin. Cephalosporin  such as cephalexin (keflex) can be used too (chance of PCN cross allergy is less than 10%).
