10 days: The recommended treatment for strep throat is 10 days of oral medication if a long acting penicillin was not given by injection. People should understand they will feel better sooner, but the length of the treatment is based on research documenting the need for 10 days to stop rheumatic fever or other problems related to strep.

No, but...: Group a strep, the bacteria that causes 'strep throat' is still universally sensitive to pcn. However, other bacteria can cause pharyngitis and acute tonsillitis, as well as many viruses. If you are not getting better, would get back with doc and see if you need a full culture or evaluation for other causes such as mono(caused by ebv virus and can sometimes give false positive result strep test).

Cephalosporins: Strep pharyngitis in most of children with penicillin allergy can be treated with cephalosporins, e.g., Keflex or omnicef (cefdinir). Children who experienced anaphylactic reaction to penicillin should be treated with macrolide.
