can doctors tell me what does persistent tinnitus indicate?

Tinnitus: Ringing in the ear can be high pitched or low pitched like a washing machine whoosh whoosh.  It can be benign or can be worrisome. It can be caused by medications, inadequate hydration, brain abnormalities, or abuse to the ear (loud music/sounds).  It can even be due to caffeine. Please see your doctor yo run the appropriate tests and look into your ear.

Depends.: The key with tinnitus &amp;#40;ringing/noise in ears&amp;#41; is to try to mask it with background noise. Simply put, it becomes harder to hear the tinnitus against more background noise. If you use headphones to listen to low level music/sound, then tinnitus is improved during this since it gets masked.  If you simply cancel out all ambient noise resulting in silence, tinnitus becomes more noticeable instead.

good day doctor. i have tinnitus problem from past 3 yrs. when i checked wit my local doctor he told my nerve has damaged. is there any solution?

Tinnitus: Assuming this is a more or less constant noise vs pulsating corresponding to your heart beat it is of little clinical significance. Tinnitus is commonly seen in association with hearing loss. Stress, anxiety, stimulants such as coffee, tea, etc can aggravate it. Xanax, (alprazolam) a medication related to valiium can be helpful in 50-60% of patients. See an ENT doctor.

Tinnitis : Tinnitis is an internal sound that a person hears that may be described as a humming, buzzing, or ringing sound. Its source is the inner ear and can result from loud noise exposures over time, certain medications, turbulent bloodflow through the internal carotid artery (pulsatile) or internal jugular vein (humming). It has nothing to do with wax in your ears or your eardrum. You would be well served to have an ENT check out your ears and perform a hearing test (audiogram) to help define the cause for your complaints.

Not sure: The appropriate referral would be to an ENT doctor.  Ask your PCP again.  You may need further testing that the PCP can't do.

TMJ MRI: There is no diagnostic study to confirm that tinnitus is due to TMJ disease. MRI is a limited study with few images, and VERY technique sensitive. Unless there is an expert MRI technician armed with "special" accessories for the TMJ MRI, the study is relatively unproductive. And if a TMJ condition is identified, surgery is likely not going to cure tinnitus as many frustrated patients have found.

can you have bppv if the dix-hallpike test is negative? i have vertigo for three months, plus tinnitus, doctor making wait two months for follow up

Accepted Answer

Possibly: BPPV is the result of loose otoconia in the vestibular inner ear and usually lasts for seconds with particular movements of the head.  It usually resolves without any medical treatment.  The tinnitus is a central excitatory problem and may not be related to the BPPV.  3 months of BPPV, if that is the correct diagnosis, is quite long and I would strongly recommend vestibular rehabilitation.
