TMJ MRI: There is no diagnostic study to confirm that tinnitus is due to TMJ disease. MRI is a limited study with few images, and VERY technique sensitive. Unless there is an expert MRI technician armed with "special" accessories for the TMJ MRI, the study is relatively unproductive. And if a TMJ condition is identified, surgery is likely not going to cure tinnitus as many frustrated patients have found.

CBCT for TMJ: is the standard. A number of health problems can cause the tinnitus. In many cases, an exact cause is never found and. Brain MRI is often recommended to rule out intracranial pathology. Rec.: see your PCP or ENT for further investigation.

No MRI: If you or your doc feel the tinnitus is coming from your TMJ, a TMJ MRi is of no value. If he is searching for an ear cause, then MRI can be important.
