No pain but pressure: You will be given novocain (procaine) for the extraction.
You will not feel pain when you are  numb, but you may feel some pressure.
Some dentists can use gas or sedation techniques.  With these you will not feel, see or hear anything during the procedure.  Talk to the dentist or surgeon about your options and your concerns.
Always follow the post operative instructions that your dentist gives you.

Post-operative instr: No vigorous exercise, soft foods, no rinsing, spitting, sucking, straws, smoking or soda.  I recommend no milk products for 72 hrs.  Keep gauze in for about 30 minutes.  Make sure it is damp when you gently remove it.  Stay well hydrated and nourished.

Soft diet : The dentist or oral surgeon removing your tooth will give you detailed instructions.  Generally stick with a soft diet for a couple of days.  No smoking.  No rinsing for the first day. Avoid hard crunchy, chewy, spicy hot foods.

Not Long: Have you asked about taking an NSAID like Ibuprofen or aleve (naproxen)? They can eliminate almost all of the pain if you start them early enough. Avoid smoking or drinking through a straw as this can cause a "dry socket" where the hole from the tooth doesn't close up. Warm saline rinses can also help if ok with your dentist just don't get too vigorous and stir things up. Pain should be gone in 3 or 4 days..

Extractions: Your dentist will numb the area so you don't feel anything. Then she\he will remove it with special dental instruments. At that point you will be give post-op instructions. Then you will have a space where the tooth was removed. Most likely, you will need to have that tooth replaced. Ask all your questions to the dentist removing the tooth. Good luck.

Extraction: Your dentist will explain to you what he\she is doing and why. You will get a local anesthetic injection to make you completely numb. Some patients get "sweet air' or IV sedation. Your dentist will use special instruments to remove your tooth. Then you will get instructions. You will have some soreness, minimal initial bleeding. Ask your treating dentist whatever else you need to know.

Other sourse: You assume that your halitosis was coming from that rotten tooth. There may be a different source. Did your dentist perform a complete exam, or did s/he just treat the problematic tooth? After you rule out any other dental problems, see a gastroenterologist regarding acid reflux and your diet.

Probably : But only if it's legal in your state and won't interfere with any prescription medication. Beware though smoking after any surgery is contraindicated, and can delay wound healing in the mouth--probably not a good idea on day one.

Varies: Everyone's experience is different. A lot of it depends on your expectations. I can use a spider web thin needle on a person with a tongue stud and you would think i harpooned them. The very same thing on a 6 year old and they don't know i did anything. Consider getting a sedative prescribed for your appointment.

Pressure: Under complete local anesthesia , you will feel pressure, may hear noise but will not feel any pain. All dentists are concerned for the comfort of their patients so just communicated with your's usually by raising your hand during the extractions if you are not comfortable.
