Rhinoplasty postop: After rhinoplasty it is imperative to keep your head elevated and to use cool compresses. These two things will help reduce and avoid excessive edema after nasal surgery.

how long soes it take for the internal nasal swelling to subside after septoplasty?could it take months(upto 3 to 6 months)??

Several wks/ months: I often tell my patients they should be able to notice a significant difference in the first couple of weeks. Rarely I do have patients that need several months to improve. After 3 months if there is no significant improvement, I would re-evaluate the anatomy in case there was something else (i.e sinusitis that's was contributing to the the situation)

how long does swelling last after a septoplasty? and is it visible swelling, or mostly inside your nose? i don't want to go out in public until it's not noticeable, because i don't want to have to explain that septoplasty is not the same thing as a nose j

A : A standard septoplasty uses an internal incision and doesn't tylically lead to external nasal swelling. Talk to your surgeon about what type of dressing he or she uses as this shuold give you a more accurate sense of what to expect after your surgery.

Septoplasty swelling: Could make your nose look different but once the swelling goes down,  you nose should be what it was prior to your procedure.  If your nose is truly crooked after a septoplasty, you should be discussing this with your surgeon.

had septoplasty 3 days ago, one nostril looks openand wide, the other is like a slit.is this normal and just swelling.scared it hasnt worked.

it's not unusual to have some nostril asymmetry after septoplasty, especially 3 days after your procedure.
Make sure to check in with your doctor and explain what's going on.

Not unusual: Most people have fluid shifts on a daily basis. While we are awake and upright, fluids tend to shift to our lower extremities. When we lie down at night there is a shift to our upper bodies and face. This is why your face may look puffy in the morning. Usually it is not very pronounced. After surgery, for weeks and sometimes for several months this can be exaggerated. It will eventually go away.

Ask your surgeon: After only nine days I'm not surprised you still have some congestion, but  there are other factors at play here. Please, direct thus question to your surgeon and his/ her staff.  Good luck.

i had septoplasty surgery in oct 2014 which straighten my deviated septum &reduced my turbinates. it's may 2015 &my nose is swollen again, making it hard to breathe. it keeps swelling on and off constantly. what can i do?

?: Have you tried pseudoephedrine? You can get it by itself, but it's even better if you get Claritin-D or Zyrtec-D (the "D" indicates pseudoephedrine is one of the ingredients) because, this time of year, allergies are very common, would account for your recurrent symptoms, and get better with the 2 drugs I listed - you may need to take it twice a day until spring is over. Ask 4 it at your pharmacy.
