Following the extraction ice is critical in the first  8 hours. (on 20 minutes off 10.) continue with the ice to 48 hours after the extraction then stop. At 72 hours use heat  packs to reduce the swelling until it is gone.

Wisdom teeth post op: Initially ice packs. Two bags filled with ice, or ice packs should be applied to the sides of the face. The ice packs should be left on continuously while you are awake. After 24 hours, ice will not help. You may have pain and swelling for a few days. This is a normal reaction to surgery. After 36 hours only moist heat (warm washcloth) is recommended.

On the days following surgery, moist heat packs applied to the face will help decrease the swelling and muscle soreness. Several!: If all four wisdom teeth were removed at the same time, there can be quite a lot of swelling. Don't expect the face to look completely normal within the first week. The swelling will get better within a week or so.

Not typically: Your face should return to its normal configuration after the teeth are removed and the swelling goes down.
