Start before: Before the extraction take a NSAID such as Motrin or aleve (naproxen). Following the extraction ice is critical in the first 8 hours. (on 20 minutes off 10.) continue with the ice to 48 hours after the extraction then stop. At 72 hours use heat packs to reduce the swelling until it is gone.

Time: Try warm salt water rinses if it's not too close to the day of the extraction. You do not want to wash out the clot that formed in the extraction site. Time will heal it best.

Ice: I would recommend ice placed on the outside of your face leaving it on 20 minutes then off 20 minutes for the first 24 hours. This procedure should help reduce swelling.

Ice then heat: You should apply ice for the first 24-48 hours and then warm moist heat will help. In addition rinse with warm salt water and taking anti-inflammatory meds like advil (ibuprofen) or motrin.
