Post Op Directions: Usually after a doctor places stitches or does surgery, they will give you very specific instructions on how to clean and maximize healing. Swelling is a normal part of the healing process that is important to heal but one that can be minimized with proper care. Follow the directions to help minimize the swelling.

Ice: The best way is to prevent swelling before it happens. Too often my patients having a dental extraction remember to start applying ice after they start swelling. Although the ice will help once the swelling starts, once the tissue swells it will now take longer for the swelling to go down. It is better to apply the ice as soon after the extraction as possible and lay down.
