Not usually.: But possible.  The pain of pe is often worse with inspiration but not always.  Pe is often one sided but again not always. Would expect a bilateral pe to produce some problems with breathing.

having severe back pain & some chest pressure. saw the dr & asked about pulmonary embolism (i have anxiety). had a chest xray. can this be seen on an xray? if one was present would something indicate for further testing from xray? good bp & pulse ox?

: No, CXR does not detect pulmonary embolism (PE). Good pulse ox (SpO2) does not rule out mild pulmonary embolism because you have to have significant low oxygen in your blood (hypoxemia) before oxygen saturation (SpO2) drops. Chest pain and high respiratory rate, rather than chest pressure, are common symptoms of PE. If you are fine now, PE is almost ruled out.

having back pain for 4 days & its spreading to shoulders middle spine & both sides of upper back. feela tense with deep breath & am anxious of pulmonary embolism. minor chest pressure but have gerd sore even at rest could this be muscular or serious?

: I believe that this spreading mid and upper back pains involving both sides is of musculoskeletal origin rather than due to any other organ pathology.  It appears to be more than simple stress or tension. Could this be from overuse,strain,being exposed to cold drafts? Try heat applications &amp; taking Tylenol. See your MD as needed.

does pulmonary embolism have warning signs first? i'm not having symptoms but i've been on bed rest and trying to get back on feet slowly.

Yes: chest pain and shortness of breath (off and on). You have to sit down with your doctor and review medications and potential predisposing conditions you have that might put you at risk (for example contraceptives)

Include; shortness of breath fatigue weakness passing out almost passing out chest pain at rest chest pain and exertion chest pain that hurts with breathing coughing up blood

Not likely: A pulmonary embolism can feel just like a heart attack in many ways - chest pressure or pain, difficulty breathing or increased shortness of breath with mild exertion, often precipitated by a clot in the lower extremities.  A lot of things can cause palpitations, but a P.E. Is not the top of the list. I would recommend seeing your doctor - possibly getting an electrocardiogram.

Pulmonary Embolism: Laboratory tests such as D-Dimer are sometimes helpful but are not definitive.  The 2 major tests used to directly assess the lungs are a CT Pulmonary Angiogram and a V/Q scan.  Most commonly done is the CT pulmonary angiogram- it is usually very quickly done and provides good assessment of location and extent of PE. An echocardiogram can be used to see if there is any heart strain from a PE.

Have you seen a Doc?: Classic presentation of pulmonary embolism is a sudden onset of pleuritic chest pain &amp;#40;pain with breathing/cough&amp;#41;; &amp; shortness of breath. Unfortunately, PE may have no obvious symptoms at presentation &amp; that&#x27;s why it&#x27;s considered a silent killer! While, symptoms may vary from abrupt catastrophic hemodynamic collapse to gradually progressive dyspnea, pain that comes and goes would be atypical.

if you had a pulmonary embolism, would the symptoms get worse over a 7 week period?

Possibly: Of course if you're continuing to have recurrent bouts of embolism, your symptoms would worsen. If the initial lung damage was complicated by secondary infection, accumulation of pleural effusion or triggered right sided heart failure,symptoms would increase in severity  .Otherwise after days or weeks the initial damage and symptoms generally gradually improve.

i went to emerge with chest pain a while back. if i had a pulmonary embolism would they have found it?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Pulmonary embolism doesn't commonly cause chest pain. It causes primarily shortness of breath. When chest pain is present, it's a very characteristic kind that's hard to miss: worse with deep breath or cough, minimized with shallow breathing.
