Yes! Get it removed!: Asbestos, i'm afraid, was commonly used in those ceilings. To be sure, you can send a sample to a testing company (it costs about $100 to test a whole house).  If it's there, get the ceiling removed professionally, don't do it yourself! scraping that junk off stirs up lots of dust and you could breathe it in. If your ceiling tests asbestos-free, it's safe.

my vision spikes like fast ripples in the dark. dots look like spiders and my popcorn ceiling looks as if it were steadily moving slowly. waking up or in the light, its gone and any distortion is very minimal and barely noticeable. whats wrong?

Stop worrying: You're not going to get asbestos on board from walking by asbestos that's not being actively tossed into the atmosphere. These old ceilings, even those that actually contain asbsetos, don't release the stuff. Despite all the silly, political stuff especially from the 1980's, they post no danger. Even if you're around one when it breaks, the exposure is trivial.

Possibly tested: Asbestos was banned in 1977. Usually when a house built before that year is purchased the owner is made aware of any asbestos that is present. Not all popcorn ceilings contain asbestos. You can have it tested if you are concerned. You can also have it removed or painted over. Painting over it will decrease some of the dust from it.

If the ceiling was painted at any time after application, it is less of a risk as paint locks it down. Not very: The principal issue with popcorn is the oils used to douse the finished product.  Many of these are synthetic, most have a high caloric content and even actual butter can be overdone.  Also if you need to limit your salt intake, popcorn can be a problem.  Popcorn itself is high volume, low caloric and a great appetite suppresant.

Depends: Air popped, no butter, maybe a little salt or other savory-it's a decent snack, source of fiber. Cooked in transfat, soaked in "butter-flavor", steeped in salt-not so good. Very easy to get excess calories, fat, and salt from a tub of typical movie house popcorn.
