my big toe has curved in slightly to the 2nd toe. no problem bending toe up but some moving it down. no pain. anything that needs attention?

Attention Required: At the very least, get an xray of your foot, as this first toe joint could be slightly damaged if you're already finding that the range of motion is affected.

Pinched nerve...: Probably. That part of your big toe is innervated by the nerve that exits the fourth lumbar vertebrae (L4) in your lower back. It's fairly common to see this but if it persists go to see a doctor. Orthopedic is the specialist or a neurologist but it will probably go away on its own if you didn't hurt your back too bad.

Exact cause unknown.: But is thought to be due to a weakness in the capsule of the joint and due to increased pressure within the joint, a ganglion cyst develops.
No, to 2nd part of your question, but I am sure it can cause it to become bigger.

A tendon: It seems that you re not feeling pain in the joint, but The Extensor hallucis Longus tendon might be the source.
It may have been strained causing some inflammation.  Just recently saw a couple of these.   The joint may need some range of motion exercises to get that tendon to stretch.   It is for some reason, unable to go the distance with flexion of that toe.

Why are you waiting?: The symptoms that your mother is having leads one to believe that there is likely a problem and left untreated it may become a serious problem. The second toe migrating to the big toe is problematic in that swelling or tissue rupture may be the cause. There is also the possibility of a stress fracture. She needs to have her foot evaluated and given some direction on the treatment plan.

Big Toe Pain: Good morning. If there is a history of trauma, their is a higher incidence of early arthritic conditions such as Hallux Limitus that cause bone spurs to form in the big toe joint, limit motion, cause "bumps" to occur over the joint, and cause more pain with activity. An x-ray would be taken to evaluate the joint and surrounding bony structures.

Tendon repair?: See physical medicine doctor or orthopedic surgeon, you need early evaluation to see if tendons can be salvaged, repair or tendon transfer might be possible.  If not bracing in your shoe should return your function to normal.

to be meor certain it would take a physical exam and some xrays 
if it is causing problems go see a doctor to evaluate it.

Yes: A bump on the top of the big toe joint develops with jamming of that joint and formation of spurring. This can be caused by trauma or elevation of the metatarsal bone. Early treatment consists of steroid injections and custom inserts to improve joint function. As it advances, surgery may be needed to restore joint function, insert a joint implant or even fuse the joint to stop painful motion.

Arthritis : Could be some form of arthritis such as gout. To be Herpes I would expect a rash. Try an anti inflammatory such as Indomethacin. If no improvement see your doctor. Good Luck
