Exact cause unknown.: But is thought to be due to a weakness in the capsule of the joint and due to increased pressure within the joint, a ganglion cyst develops.
No, to 2nd part of your question, but I am sure it can cause it to become bigger.

It forms: No one really know why....We do know it can come from a joint, a tendon etc...
