A tendon: It seems that you re not feeling pain in the joint, but The Extensor hallucis Longus tendon might be the source. It may have been strained causing some inflammation. Just recently saw a couple of these. The joint may need some range of motion exercises to get that tendon to stretch. It is for some reason, unable to go the distance with flexion of that toe.

Down the middle..: The area of the toe that you are describing has two different nerves covering it. One has a pain reaction when the toe is flexed. The other is already numb throughout the location in the toe. These are the superficial and deep peroneal nerves. To remove all doubt, have your toe evaluated. There could be a possibility of trauma to the toe and/or involved nerves.
