Depends..: ... On what you are having done. Are you in pain? Are you going in for a check-up and cleaning? Either way you will fill out a health history when you get there, the staff and dentist will introduce themselves, and then you will explain what it is they can do for you. Radiographs will probably be taken, and then treatment will be rendered.

Advancements in dental techniques have made dental visits easier.  Find a dentist that treats nervous patients and consider mild sedation fro your anxiety.

The : The only way you will ever know for sure what is happening in your mouth is to have an examination with radiographs from a trusted dentist in your area. No one can diagnose whether or not you have problems without examining you.

Just because you brush your teeth and have no pain does not mean you have no problems.

Depends: If hot cold sense, put some gum or soft wax over it.  If swelling, throbbing, warm salt water may help along with ice packs.  Take it easy, use some tylenol (acetaminophen) and Ibuprofen in alternating pattern to help.  Call another dentist or even go to er if you need.  Er should be last because they will just given you antibiotic and pain med no matter what the issue.

Discuss: Discuss your fears with your dentists. There are countless innovations in dentistry these days that can help make your appointment less scary. Laughing gas can help and general anesthesia is an option as well if you feel like you can't get past the fear.

Oil of cloves: If your toothache is caused by an open hole in the tooth, from a pharmacy dental section, you with find temporary filling material. Find one with the ingredient Eugenol or "oil of cloves". For pain, Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Motrin taken at the sametime. work very well for pain.

my insurance won't be enough for xrays. will the dentist get mad at me if i just can't do it?

Not mad: Not mad (i hope) but we are obliged to provide diagnostic services to the "standard of care". This includes "looking under the hood" using xrays periodically. He may refuse to treat you without them, .
