Depends: If hot cold sense, put some gum or soft wax over it. If swelling, throbbing, warm salt water may help along with ice packs. Take it easy, use some tylenol (acetaminophen) and Ibuprofen in alternating pattern to help. Call another dentist or even go to er if you need. Er should be last because they will just given you antibiotic and pain med no matter what the issue.

OTC pain relievers: I recommend Ibuprofen 600mg as needed. You can also alternate Ibuprofen and tylenol (acetaminophen) every 3 to 4 hours. Ibuprofen is marketed as advil and motrin. Use as directed on packaging.

Advil/tylenol: If you alternate 200 mg advil or Ibuprofen with 2 extra strength tylenol (acetaminophen) you will have very good pain control until tomorrow. Please see your dentist as soon as possible because pain is often a sign of infection.

Advil (ibuprofen) or Alleve: I recommend 3 advil (ibuprofen) every 3-4 hrs until you are seen. Or 2 alleve in the morning and 2 in the evening.
