Not mad: Not mad (i hope) but we are obliged to provide diagnostic services to the "standard of care". This includes "looking under the hood" using xrays periodically. He may refuse to treat you without them, .

No: Why are you worried about your dentist getting mad!? If your last x ray was within 6 months you are ok if everything was normal on the last x- ray. If it has been a long time and it is time explain your situation to your dentist. I personally would do it at no charge if you can't afford it and i feel like it is absolutely needed and you have been a great patient. Hope you don't need it.

Be honest and ask: Remember, we cannot fully diagnose and say you are cavity free without x-rays. They are usually not very expensive either. If you are really in a pinch with money, just be upfront and tell them you want x-rays , but just can't afford them right now. You never know what they may say.

xrays are needed to see if there is any decay between the teeth and to see if there is any bone loss due to gum disease

To not use x-rays is to guess, and no practitioner wants to have to guess about your health. You don't want your practitioner to work blind. X-rays are basic to Successful Dental treatment, and a basic component to Dental Insurance Plans. If not covered by yours, work out a payment plan with Dentist rather than handicapping the diagnostic process.
