my heart rate's been fluctuating quickly 80-170bpm for a week. ekg and labs normal, mitral valve prolapse on echo. burning in inner ears today. ideas?

Do you have SVT?: It you have supraventricular tachycardia diagnosed cilnically or on holter monitor, there are a variety of ways to approach it -- i used to have it (and mild prolapse on echo) and found that simply staying in really good aerobic shape worked better than meds, as the textbooks confirm. This is one for a good general physician or a caridologist.

: At your age almost certainly nothing to worry about. Headache not heart related nor is back pain. Your body is talking to you. Listen and take good notes. Then discus with your Dr.

Prolapse=sag ?: As young as ur u haven't any consequences of mitral prolapse. But the echo can pick this up as it will show a little back flow after the chamber contracts. A very sensitive test & u need 2 discuss how bad it is & what u need 2 b aware of.

Yes: A thorough echocardiogram would include evaluation of the mitral valve, and would easily show whether or not it prolapses.

Yes and no: Cannot rule out plaque build up. Echo is the diagnostic tool to rule evaluate mitral valve prolapse. During a stress echo the mitral valve is may not be well evaluated though.

MVP Rarely Serious: As always, get copies of echo video &amp; examine yourself to better understand. This is an echo DX &amp; usually does not indicate anything of importance; echo reader is attempting to find something to justify echo or imply basis of symptoms. MVP is in the eye of the reader, some docs call it a lot, some rarely (same images). Valve leak more relevant but still usually minor if BP &amp; Heart size low normal.

i have to have an echo ultrasound test done.  for a possible mitral valve prolapse, what does this consist of and what problems can it detect?

Echocardiogram: The echo is an ultrasound of the heart and allows one to assess the valve function and performance and the magnitude of pathology of mitral valve prolapse.  It takes about 30 minutes, it doesn't hurt, and is completely safe.
It also allows onr to see how the rest of the heart is performing, whether there has been damage to the heart muscle or if there are other valves are not working right.

Unlikely: Murmurs can be due to any different conditions.  The murmur of mitral valve prolapse is due to the blood leaking back into the left atrium, and occurs during the systole, or the contracting phase of cardiac cycle. It is unlikely that your echocardiogram was normal two months ago and now you have murmur. You should repeat the echo and talk to a cardiologist.

Dull chest pain: Can be structural in origin.  Can be referred from the esophagus. Rarely from rhythm problem with prolapse. May need haltor.

Mitral valve: Prolapse may be a risk for endocarditis, strange rhythms and odd chest pain, the click murmur, so called barlow's syndrome. Ejection fraction 75% is normal..
