how long does it take to recover from spine surgery?

Depend: Recovery time is dependent on the  type of surgery that is performed. Most microdiscectomies have full recovery in 3 to 6 weeks...Depending on peeexidting nerve damage. Most fusions will take 8 to 12 weeks to recover. All will begin walking on the same day of surgery. Many procedures are done as outpatient.

Call your surgeon: The only person who should be advising you following spine surgery is your Surgeon. He has complete information on your recent care and can tell you exactly when and how much to take. Hypertension can affect healing after any surgery and should be controlled well. This is an urgent problem.

Cauda equina: This syndrome is due to compression on nerve roots within the spine at the lumbar level. It causes incontinence of stool and retention of urine, but not constipation. Pressure on the nerve roots should be relieved as fast as possible (4-6 hrs) to avoid permanent damage. If he is taking opiate meds for pain after surgery, that may be the main reason for constipation. Use more fiber, water, softener

Go see a doctor: Post surgical complications can occur.  Your dad could have an ileus.  Maybe he has a infection in his abdomen.  Does he have a fever?  I would call your surgeon and let him know about this.

Maybe: It depends a lot on what surgery you have and how badly you want to jump.  The problem is in landing can cause a lot of impact on the spine.  If you have a healed spine after surgery and it is very stable, it should be ok.  However, the more often you put impacts on the spine, the more it will be prone to further problems down the road.

Be careful....: I have a car, and it is drives slow on the highway, & stalls frequently, i'm thinking of going to change my front tires. Thoughts? "laser spine surgery" only havs limited application, as laser is a tool just like all the other tools we use in surgery. There is no one tool that takes care of all problems. Run fast if anyone tells you otherwise. Changing a tire will not fix all problems my car has.

DONT SMOKE: Don't smoke!  see the physical therapist before the surgery and get used to doing the rehab exercises prior to the surgery so you will already be somewhat conditioned to doing them afterwards.

Depends: Minimally invasive spine surgery aims to achieve the same goals as standard surgery, just with less tissue damage.  A lot depends on the actual problem and the experience of the surgeon.  There is definitely a learning curve and the initial results show more complications with minimally invasive surgery. A good compromise might be "less" invasive but still maximally effective surgery.
