Cauda equina: This syndrome is due to compression on nerve roots within the spine at the lumbar level. It causes incontinence of stool and retention of urine, but not constipation. Pressure on the nerve roots should be relieved as fast as possible (4-6 hrs) to avoid permanent damage.
