i broke my hand and had surgery to replace my bone with a metal plate. what are the long-term side effects?

Replace?: Usually a metal plate is used to hold the bone while it heals.  The bone will eventually be strong without limitations.  The plate is not removed unless it causes problems.  If the plate was used to replace the bone (unlikely) then this is temporary and you will need more surgery.

Not necessarily: If there is no damage to the bones, but they are shifting due to stretched/damaged wrist ligaments, a more conservative treatment would be prolotherapy - an injection therapy used to strengthen &amp; tighten ligaments. It's a lot better than wrist fusion, allowing normal function of the wrist. If it fails, you can always still get surgery, later.

Exercise: the best way to increase circumference is exercise, especially weight training.

i've had wrist arthroscopic surgery done, and now it looks like my bones seperated and they pop all the time and its very painful..is this normal?

Accepted Answer

Wrist arthroscopy: If you are early in the postop period, you may simply be experiencing pain and popping due to postop inflammation, which should resolve with time.  If you are well beyond the postop period, then you should see your surgeon for follow-up to include x-rays for re-evaluation.

had carpal release surgery last yr. but now i have a small lump like a bone sticking out of my wrist, it hurts quite abit but dr says its nothing?

Need exam: Unfortunately this would take a physical examination as well as review of imaging studies to give a real answer, but there could be scar tissue there, or could be just anatomy you hadn't noticed there, or could be a cyst, etc.  Consider a 2nd opinion if you're still concerned.

i had surgery on my wrist for kienbocks disease in oct. and recently either the (triquertrum or pisiform) bone and been hurting bad should i worry?

Be seen by MD: You should return to your surgeon and have the site evaluated, perhaps MRI or ultrasound study to see if there are issues at the site. May be inflammatory, arthritic type changes or incomplete healing. Either way you should return for proper exam and care.

pain in right wrist since 3 months. have taken ct, mri&bone scan. it seems to be an intraosseous ganglion cycst in lunate bone.is surgery required?

Pain ok: If you have a ganglion cyst it may continue to cause pain but can be tolerated.  The surgery may work but it can recur.  Try to see if you can tolerate it if not then go for surgery.

how long des it take to heal bone fracture in 81 year old after surgery (big toe fracture  and wrist dislocation)?

6-8 weeks: Toe fractures usually heal in 6-8 weeks where the fracture has bridging bone on x-ray  and the fragments become stable. Swelling may persist for months. Wrist dislocations heal slower because the ligaments are ruptured and may take months to resolve.

my radius and ula bone broken 5 year then had surgery the by the help of plate my bone join then now  after 5 year there is little difference in size of hand as compare to other hand ? any serious or normally occur these , no pain in my hand?

: I feel that your hand size is not unusual.  I doubt if any serious effects will occur.  Keep active and continue to use your hand.

: That depends on the actual findings. The fingers have a complex attachment system that allows them to flex and extend at the various joints. A fracture may compromise one of the tendon attachments and lead to a permanent defect without surgery. It is best to have it x-rayed &amp; reviewed by a doc who understands the issues involved.
