Not commonly but: Diarrhea can be a side effect of prozac (fluoxetine) and if not short lived or if severe would be an indication to stop the medication and cal your doctor. It may, if needed, help to start off more slowly with half the dose and then increase if tolerated.

Only difference is: Let your provider know about this side effect. This is the only way they can provide the best treatment choices, they need to know. Otherwise, do what you'd normally do w/ respect to diarrhea. Diet choices and OTC remedies (follow directions) and drink lots of water. How do you know it's caused by Prozac (fluoxetine)? Again, discuss w/ Dr. best!

Yes and No: Fluoxetine has a relatively long half-life.  Missing a dose will not harm you.  However, it may not reduce your likelihood of avoiding diarrhea.  Your best option is to discuss your symptom or side effect with your prescribing provider.  You may need to switch to a different class of antidepressant because medications in the SSRI class are known to have GI side effects. Best wishes.

I doubt diarrhea: would affect absorption of prozac (fluoxetine), (fluoxetine)unless its profuse diarrhea right after you take it. It may be that the prozac (fluoxetine) is no longer working for you. Talk to your Dr about this,especially if the diarrhea persists.

19 days ago i switched from ssri fluoxetine to sertraline as fluoxetine was no longer working (been on it 7 years at 60mg) and am now experiencing nausea, cramps and diarrhea quite badly. is this normal. should i stop sertraline (on 50mg)?

No, it's not: normal and you could be having a reaction to the new medicine or the two medications mixing in your system .  Ask the person who switched your medicines what to do, please.

Probably prozac (fluoxetine): Prozac (fluoxetine) can cause these symptoms.  Unfortunately, this medicine usually produces unpleasant effects before positive effects, but they usually go away after a few days.

: Would revise current meds with prescribing doc as they both can cause diarrhea as side effects. If you had antibiotics around infection time, work up for diarrhea may be needed.

Not the vomiting: Is related to meds. Prozac (fluoxetine) can cause chronic nausea but not diarrhea. Prilosec can cause diarrhea but not vomiting. Lactose intolerance can cause both, though taking Lactaid is supposed to treat that condition.  I would stop everything and start over beginning with the Prilosec. You haven't been on Prozac (fluoxetine) long enough to withdraw.

Luvox (fluvoxamine) effects : Serotonin, which like all of the nerve transmitters in the brain, lines the entire G.I. Track. During fetal development the bottom of the neural crest which becomes the brain heads south and remains connected to the brain both through nerves as well as through nerve transmitters that line the G.I. Track. When people take a medication like luvox, (fluvoxamine) which is an ssri, the excess serotonin stimulation within the G.I. Tract can trigger a diarrhea response. It does this by affecting and binding to serotoninreceptors in the G.I. Tract which can cause subsequent diarrhea. The gut is being increasingly referred to as the third brain and the whole effect of the gut and the bacteria that we have in our intestines is a huge area of research into human well-being and illness at the present time.

Please take with : Food. I saw that you have chest pain noted. If  chest pain started since you began Prozac (fluoxetine) & is associated with palpitations or difficulty breathing, swelling of mouth, tongue, lips or airway - than you may need emergent tx. Most people are able to handle GI effects of Prozac (fluoxetine) after a couple of weeks. Some people have improvement with probiotics.
