one is supposed to be on low fiber diet before colonoscopy. is it ok to keep taking oatmeal for breakfast? if not, when should one stop?

: NO. There are different protocols and regimens to prepare for a colonoscopy that use combinations of laxatives, stool softeners, and osmotic purging solutions to assure there is nothing in your colon that will obscure the doctor's view. Avoiding fiber for two days is also important since it is the nondigestible fibers that block the view. It is crucial you follow YOUR OWN Doctor's instructions.

Time does not matter: All meals should have ample fiber in what you eat. Fruits , veggies and cereals(breakfast time) is a good opportunity to load up on fiber but it works well anytime you eat and with any meals.

Multiple fibers.: I can not envision any harmful effects rom the amount of fiber. It would be nice to have some other food groupd as well to round out the breakfast mea; such as fruits.

Try Miralax (polyethylene glycol): It's pretty gentle, is available otc, tastes fine mixed in a drink & you can take more for a stronger effect. Adding a dose of senna or bisacodyl might speed things up.

i've noticed every time i eat oatmeal for breakfast, i feel bloated/gassy afterward all day or for a good part of the day and sometimes even have an upset stomach. other high-fiber foods don't have that effect. could that indicate an allergy to oats?

Digestion/Gluten:  
Gluten insensitivity  can cause these symptoms. If it's only oats, just avoid them. If it is a problem with other cereals (wheat, rye, barley ) you should follow up with a gastroenterologist.

Try varying it.: Fiber is viewed favorably for its absorption of fluid, preventing constipation, lowering cholesterol and (sometime) blood sugar. However, it can contribute to bowel gas. A trial of reduced fiber might help.  Another approach can be a trial of the active  agent in Gas-X, simethicone; it's available in oral forms. Its mechanism of action is the reduction of bubble surface tension, reducing gas.

whate are the differences between rice and oatmeal cereals? is there a benefit to more one than the other?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Rice cereal is thinner when mixed and easier to swallow in the transsition from sucking to eating.  It is also less allergenic .  Oatmeal cereal is thicker and more caloric, whic is a good progression from rice cereal to chewing.

Sugar butter: After peanuts, sugar is the most common ingredient in store-bought peanut butter. Nuts are a great source of protein but the added sugar is empty calories. Try making your own using unsalted nuts and a food processor. You'll have to refrigerate it since it won't have any preservatives. Trust me, it's delicious and good for you too. See : See your doctor and ask for a prescription for hydroquinone. There are different strengths. Maybe start out with a lower percent and work your way up as tolerated. In the meantime if you want to cover up your dark elbows apply under eye concealer to your elbows (dab it on) and finish with a liittle powder.

Yes: Traditionally prepared oatmeal is very healthy food, not instant oatmeal. Take 10 to 15 min to prepare it, add slices of banana, blueberries & strawberries. Organic honey, a teaspoon of organic coconut oil with ground cinnamon can be added & it will make a perfect breakfast together with a cup of black coffee or tea without sugar. Yummy yummy!
