ENT/Plastic Surgeon: If you just want to breathe and have no cosmetic concerns, then go to an ent.  If you want the outside of the nose changed, then see a facial plastic surgeon.  There are websites for both groups to help you find a physician.

15-17 years old: The nose and face should achieve a mature, adult appearance before septoplasty.  The growth centers of the nose are located in the septum, and surgery can disrupt them if performed too early.  Typically, surgery is not done before age 15 (girls) or 17 (boys).

Septoplasty : Septoplasty is performed inside the nose on the structure that divides the right and left airways. It is done to improve breathing. Septoplasty alone does not change the outer structure of the nose.

Moisture: The best thing is saline in either spray form or irrigation form. Humidified air helps recovery as well. Check with your surgeon if she or he has any specific instructions regarding your post-op care and saline.

what are possible complications from septoplasty? i'm about to schedule a septoplasty. my surgeon keeps saying complications are rare. i get that, but i'd just like to be prepared in case i'm one of the rare ones.

Risks : Risks include but are not limited to anaesthetic related complications, bleeding, septal perforation, over-resection that can lead to saddle deformity (loss of dorsal support), synechia formation (internal scar bands), rarely alteration in smell acuity, and temporary numbness and tingling in the upper central dentition.

If : If your nasal obstruction is severe, it is possible that your headaches may be secondary to a barosinus response. In other words, air filled cavities (i.e., your sinuses) which normally connect and drain into the nasal cavity can't effectively do so creating pressure or traction type pains about the affected sinuses(i.e., forehead- frontal sinus, between eyes-ethmoid sinus, cheek or molar teeth areas-maxillary, behind eyes or top of head-sphenoid sinus). Septoplasty
typically doesn't result in bad headaches beyond the period of temporary nasal packing and resolution of reactive mucosal swelling (short-lived and typically dull, achey, and mild). Understand that there are many causes of headache and not necessarily attributable to your nasal blockage such as underlying untreated sinusitis, atypical migraine variant, facial neuralgia syndromes etc. A proper history, exam, and appropriate radiological studies would be helpful in sorting this out.

You : You may want to take about a week off work if you have both a rhinoplasty and septoplasty at the same time. It's best to have the rhinoplasty concurrently as it's very common to use the cartilage harvested during a septoplasty to do some of the rhinoplasty work.
