Recurrent clots in your lungs means you need life long anticoagulation with blood thinners such as coumadin (warfarin). You should also see a hematologist for evaluation of why you make clots. It can be hereditary. So, with medical therapy, and monitoring your prognosis is good.

If she is smoking, this will increase rate of decline& frequency of flares from her lung disease in addition to increasing risk for developing various cancers/ heart disease/ and future clots!

While clots can form in the lungs themselves, it is more common for emboli to be derived from peripheral veins (like the legs / pelvis) and break free to travel to the lungs.  One symptom is shortness of breath.  If you are concerned about this, please visit with a physician and have appropriate exam and testing.

Don't think so.: Less likely than what? Most blood clots in the lung came from the calves.  It is very unlikely for clots to form north of the calf without starting in the calf. Many clots probably do not migrate, but  when they do it can be fairly serious.

If high, the gold standard of testing for a pe is a spiral cat scan of the lungs with infusion.
