Chicken pox: While you are indeed correct that Aspirin use has been associated with reye's , this is not the case with any of the other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (nsaid's). So it is fine to use Ibuprofen with chicken pox.

Stomach irritation: We usually recommend waiting until about 6 months before starting to use Ibuprofen for babies for fever or pain. It can cause irritation of the stomach, and in rare cases it can interfere with platelet function. Always ask a doctor for the correct dose. Dose should be based on the baby's weight , not age.

No.: Ibuprofen may reduce your fever but it will not generally affect the outcome of the illness. Fever generally comes back as soon as the ibuprofen wears off.

Fever: Fever is one of the body's defenses against infection. If it's low (&lt;102) , let it ride. It's part of the immune systems defense arsenal. If it persists for &gt;5 days then please see you doc.

: It would be prudent to consult with his pediatrician as he may have an infection requiring antibiotic treatment. You may give him ibuprofen as it is different from Excedrin. Make sure he drinks enough water and/or juice so that he passes urine every 4-6 hours.

: Yes, you can do that and we often use this regimen for controlling mild pain. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 650 -1,000 mg alternating with Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) OTC 200 mg x 2 or 3 tablets every 6 hours as needed.

Some basics: Fever reducing meds are not like adding gas to your car. They influence the natural fever response of an illness by taking a degree or so off the peak. Many viruses will have swings in the fever &amp; they often cycle up/down over 2-6 hr wave, the response is unpredictable. If you give a med on the way down it appears to work. If given when ready to go up, it seems to fail.

my child is 5mths and 16 days old, she's spiked a small fever that's not going away on it's own. is it okay to give infants ibuprofen?

Fever: The issue really is not which fever reducer is ok to use. A baby of that age should not be treated for a fever that won't go away without knowing why? Have her evaluated by a pediatrician. :)
