Hiatal hernia: Majority of people do not realize that they have hiatal hernia as they usually do not have significant symptoms- especially if it is small. However if it is bigger-it may cause symptoms- which will include- bloathing, heart burn, difficulty swallowing, chest pain etc.

But, you should have had some symptoms during pregnancy, but maybe you thought it was just being pregnant. Anyways, you'll need a doctor for this. Until you see one, eat smaller meals, not late at night, use some pillows if you can, and antacids and avoid greasy or acidic foods.

Yes you can: Gerd s will give those symptoms , due to regurgitation of gastric contents into esophagus ,  size of hernia has no correlation , big or small h hernia , some times big hernia may not even give symptoms  ( gerd s).

i have been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. i have no other symptoms than severe shortness of breath. i had several lung tests done - all clear. topzole is making no difference. anything else i can try? should i consider surgery?

Second opinion: Hiatal hernia should not be causing shortness of breath. While surgery of hiatal hernia may be needed to address reflux, that is not likely to fix the shortness of breath. You should get a second opinion before undertaking surgery.

Check Diet.: Pain from a hiatal hernia usually is radiated to your shoulder.  If you have reflux after eating, I would suggest sitting up for about 4 hours after eating and I would avoid liquids prior to retiring for the evening.  You should look at avoiding spicy foods that may cause problems with digestion.  You should consider your bowel activity, primarily constipation.  Consult your primary care physician
