i've had 2 surgeries within 3 days of eachother for bunion removal. my screws keep backing out and bone incongruent. do i need the joint fused?

Screw loose.: Something is not right. Either the fixation was questionable or there was too much activity post surgery. You had better get a second opinion before the situation gets out of hand. Properly done, it would take more than 2 days to fail unless there was aggravating circumstances. Clearly, you would know if your post operative activity was at play here and if not, you should take action accordingly.

Can Stay: Internal fixation screws can stay in place indefinitely assuming they are not causing any problems.  Rarely if there is pain from the hardware the screws can be removed.

If they hurt: Otherwise can leave them in.

Accepted Answer

Not usually: Unless the screw used in the bunion correction is prominent or you're having a rare reaction to the metal, screw removal does not usually help with swelling.  Swelling is normal after bunion surgery.

Options: If the screw is completely in the bone and not causing pain it can be left in, if it is bothering you a portion can be removed, sometimes the entire screw but not often.

would it be possible that a screw moved out of placed (bunion)  when i stepped down it felt like something went in my toe?

That would all : Depend on how long ago the screw was placed in. For example if recent it is possible vs if many years ago unlikely. An xray would always confirm for you...

: You should talk to your surgeon.

No: I would expect to be straight. Check with the surgeon for explanations.

am considering bunionectomy for moderate bunion.  dr wants to use a screw and i am opposed. is there any way to cut and realign bone without using scr?

No screw loose.: There certainly is. I have used K-wires as well as screws for fixation for years. Either one works just fine. The K-wire does not remain in the wound as it is removed after several weeks. The removal is performed in the office and is generally not painful at all. There are some surgeons that often use no fixation at all, relying on  bandaging for adequate immobilization. Not recommended by me.

No: Only if it is causing pain or some other problem.
