Subungual hematoma: Is a possibility which is blood under the nail from microtrauma, either bumping the toe or hitting it. You may want to check this with a doctor as you would want to rule out a more dangerous condition like a melanoma.

my big left toe nail is slightly blue. i dont recall any injury to it. sometimes it looks normal but most of the time its blue. what can it be?

: If you do not have any associated pain of the affected toe or your foot, just watching it for now. If pain occurs, you need to see your doctor. If you have significant underlying medical problems such as poor controlled diabetes or hypertension you need to be examined.

Honky Tonk blues...: Blue spots, faded or not, can represent a small amount of blood either trapped under the nail or sluggishly moving near the surface of the skin. If there is not enough to irritate a nerve, then there will be no pain. Another school of thought is that it just might be a faded blue, painless small spot on the right toe nail.

my toe nail is blue n green because i dropped a heavy bowl on it, do i have to have it drained or will it get better in time?

Not required.: Draining can help relieve pain but it is not required.  two methods to punch hole in  nail: #1.  drill a hole with a sharp object such as a hollow needle or small drill bit  #2 uncoil a paperclip half way. bend clip to form a  90 degree angle 1/16 inch from free tip.  Heat to red hot and poke short tip through nail as quickly as possible.  Instant relief.  I am sure there is a youtube.

Fungal infection: It looks like you have fungal infection of the toenail. It requires long term (couple of months )of antifungal treatment since it is tough for the antifungal medicine to penetrate  and destroy the microbe. In any case i advise you to see your pcp, he /she may take some sample or treat you empirically.

Maybe.: Depends on nature of surgery and size of the bruise (which is what the blue-purple color represents). Call your surgeon; he or she will be in a much better position to predict what will happen than any of us can, sight unseen.

In the line of fire.: Trauma comes in all flavors. The fact that the little toe is where it's at offers it more low grade, unassuming trauma than the other toes. It takes only a minimal amount of pressure, applied over a longer period to traumatize the nail, nail nail or nail root. Give it it some time and see what develops before suspecting something worse. To remove all doubt, send a picture and use concierge.

i had injured my toe nail years ago and it had turned blue & was hurting. it was completely removed in 2017. now it grew back as it was and its still hurting. what do i do?

Podiatry: consult your podiatrist asap. You may have underlying nailbed tauma or infection/inflammmation. The original nail was removed due to the pressure of old blood ( blue color) between the deep nailbed and the nail itself. Try laying off running or aerobics until cleared by your podiatrist.

hi, a bench fell on my daughters toe last night. it is blue on the toe nail since last night. but this morning on the toe knuckle of the toe as well. she is in more pain this morning. what can i give her for the pain? she is 5year old.

Toe pain: Put her in the stiffest soled shoe you have. If toe is in the right position, it will heal even if it is broken if splinted by stiff soled shoe. Blood under her toenail causes pressure and is painful. It is hard to make a hole in the nail without a  cautery tool that is in the office but this often relieves the pressure and pain.

my one year old son has a blue/black spot on his left toe nail. it has been there for like two months.

Bruise: He likely hit his toe &amp; accumulated blood beneath the nail. When this happens it takes a long time for the stain to grow out. Kids toenails grow at 1-2 mm/mo so it can take quite a while for it to move to the top &amp; allow you to cut away the stained part. It is not a reason to worry.
