Subungual hematoma: Is a possibility which is blood under the nail from microtrauma, either bumping the toe or hitting it. You may want to check this with a doctor as you would want to rule out a more dangerous condition like a melanoma.

Get it checked: A dark discoloration under the toenail can be as innocent as a bruise or as serious as skin cancer. If it does not appear to be dried blood under the nail, it may need to be biopsied.
