: Good question!. Are you able to take part in the activity without cardiac symptoms of shortness of breath or chest symptoms? The cardiologist may say you can function well and proceed with risk Or you have signs of cardiac dysfunction so significant that it requires catheterization.  Either way, you probably need to take aspirin and high-dose cholesterol medication. See your doctor

i'm getting anterior hip replacement surgery here soon. i'm 53 and weight 115 lbs. i'm very healthy and active despite the extreme pain. i need a nicotine urine test before they will put me on the schedule. how many days w/o smoking will it take?

: Do not hide smoking history from your doctors, please.
Nicotine is broken down to cotinine in the body and urine test detects cotinine.
By DrugRehab.com: cotinine level in urine begin to return to normal about seven to 10 days after you last smoked, according to the University of Rochester Medical Center. If you smoke regularly, it may take up to three weeks for the cotinine to clear your system.

is it normal to have groin pain after hip replacement? 3 months out,  a lot of groin pain. feels like it is at the iliac crest, a burning ache. bent leg/sitting worsens it. anterior approach. diflucan helped leg but not groin. pain prior to surgery

Not normal: Groin pain is a very common symptom of hip osteoarthritis and I wonder if you experienced it before hip replacement. I tend to think that your current discomfort is somehow related to the hip joint or surrounding structures. I don't see how diflucan, an antifungal medication, helped pain. See your orthopedic surgeon for evaluation and advice.

i am a 57 y.o. female and had an anterior right total hip replacement 8 weeks ago and a debridement 3 weeks ago. my sites are opening up again and i have pain in my buttock when i walk. my lower spine is fused from previous surgeries. what can it be?

: If incisional sites are "opening up" after eight weeks post surgical hip replacement, it may indicate post-surgical collection of blood from the debridement.  See your surgical physician who performed the hip surgery for an exam to rule out infection, etc..

Uncommon: If your sciatic pain has been going on for 8 months, you may be dealing with a herniated lumbar disc and an MRI of your lumbosacral spine would be worthwhile for evaluation and treatment decision. You could consult a neurologist or neurosurgeon first.

6 months: At least 6 months. The person you want to ask that question is the orthopedic surgeon doing the hip replacement. He/she should make the call. Also, the ortho doc will probably cover you with antibiotics to prevent infection of the hip replacement. Also make sure the liposuction doc knows about the hip replacement.

The overall safety really depends on the overall medical/health condition of the patient undergoing the surgery.

It depends: If you are comparing it to a knee replacement or a shoulder replacement then the answer is "no it is probably not that painful." however, the length of recovery is quite dependent on other variables, including patient factors, surgical factors and postop therapy factors that may make the experience more or less painful.
