Dosage is fine: More than that can be given in other acute infections, although for a strep throat 5-6 ml /dose would suffice given your son's weight, but the extra 2-3 ml wouldn't be harmful, probably your son's doctor suspected an upper respiratory infection as well such as acute sinusitis. You may want to verify it with your doctor if you're concerned, otherwise continue till the follow up visit, good luck

Rx'd by physician?: Was the strep throat formally diagnosed by a physician?  Strep should be diagnosed by a physician via a rapid test or culture, you don't want to treat with antibiotics for a viral pharyngitis.  The physician would have prescribed the amoxicillin in the dosage that is correct.  As a general rule, it is 40 mg/kg per day divided into 2-3 doses for a strep infection.  Amount depends on concentration.

my 2 1/2 year old 28lb daughter was prescribed amoxicillin 400mg/5ml at a dose of 10ml twice a day for an ear infection. im worried the dose is high; does this dose seem correct?

: The dose for treatment of an ear infection is typically 80 -90 mg per kg per day. The dose is a bit high. Discuss with your Pediatrician. A dose of 6. 3 ml twice daily is an option for  similar patients, based on weight. In the meantime, watch for signs of fever and worsening pain.

Needs a recheck: Taking an antibiotic for an ear infection does not protect into the future. If he is symptomatic again, he may have another infection. The only way to know is to have his doctor examine him. In the meantime, use Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen as tolerated for pain.

hi so i was just reading that it can be safe to take two year old 500mg amoxicillin wanted to ask for a professional opinion id go to the dr's but the weather is terrible where i am so its unsafe for me to go driving around what with the blizzard hitting

Amoxicillin: It is not safe to give antibiotic to a young child without being checked by a doctor, but because of bad weather you can call your pediatrician &amp; ask his advice based on the child condition, he will tell if it is ok to use it &amp; how much to give based on the symptoms &amp; the weigt of the child. The avarage dose for a 2 year old is 200 mg every 12 hours. But it can differ due to diagnosis &amp; weight.

two year old had allergic reaction to amoxicillin. dr replaced it with cefprozil. instruct on cefprozil say not to take it if allergic to penicillin?

Old concern: The caution on cephalosporins if penicillin allergic dates back decades to how they were produced--there often was pcn in the cephalosporins as a byproduct. Even then, risk was rare and tiny. Now even smaller, and far better to not exclude two huge antibiotic categories at young age if don't need to. Keep an eye on child as with any medication, but should not pose a problem.

Diaper rash ???: Intake of any oral antibiotics can kill off many friendly germs in the digestive tract. This allows the yeast germs to increase in population &amp; often triggers a yeast diaper rash. This is usually treated with an anti-fungal cream. Call the kids doc.

my 2 year old is on day3 of amoxicillin for tonsillitis which followed a cold.cough has lasted 3 weeks & since having the medicine the cough is worse. really husky. should i get her checked again?

Cough: Sometimes the cough can sound worse before it resolves. If she is otherwise ok, active and playful, good appetite, no fever, you can wait another day or two before having her reexamined.
