Ambien (zolpidem): Zolpidem (Ambien (zolpidem)) is indicated for short-term treatment of insomnia with difficulty of sleep onset. Ambien (zolpidem) produces tolerance and dependence when used long-term. Although trazodone is efficacious for sleep maintenance difficulties, its use in insomnia is off-label and is associated with cognitive and motor impairments. Long-term treatment with medication alone is not the optimal treatment strategy

Yes: It is safe to take both as there are no interactions between those 2 medicines.

Yes: It is fine to take some melatonin to try and help you taper off the ambien (zolpidem). Getting off the ambien (zolpidem) is a great idea. It can disrupt normal sleep cycles for a long time.

Now sounds like a good time to leave your doc a message about how Ambien (zolpidem) has become ineffective &amp;#40;which is one of the many drawbacks of habit forming meds&amp;#41;. While technically there is no interaction b/w Ambien (zolpidem) &amp; trazodone, if Ambien (zolpidem) is no longer working, perhaps discuss stopping that one?

Addiction: Obsession or addiction to sleep medications can become just as serious as alcoholism. It surely sounds like you are over doing it.  If Ambien (zolpidem) is used too often it becomes less and less effective. Combining sleeping medications is a good sign to a physician that you are most likely addicted and it would be dangerous not to address this with you.  Many people in drug treatment get there for ambien (zolpidem).

Not safe : You should not overdose on any medication including ambidn . If the maximum recommended dose is not effective then it should be changed and something else should be tried.

After using Ambien (zolpidem) for 2 years, you have developed Tolerance, so it is not effective any more.
Ambien (zolpidem) CR will not be effective either.
Insomnia is a symptom of effects of stress in your life for which Therapy, Breathing and Music Relaxation, Yoga, Meditation are beneficial.
