More calories.: You probably need more calories to build bulk. To lose fat, cut back on refined carbohydrates and sugar.   No bread, cookies, cakes etc..  Eat nutrient/protein dense foods like lean meats, chicken, fish.  Eat healthy fats like those found in walnuts, avocados, olive oil.

He should count the grams of protein in his diet to make sure supplementation is necessary.  Too much protein may be an expensive way to getting too many calories.  This will lead to fat accumulation instead of weight loss.
