May not matter: These 'long' seizures are typicallly there to capture an event.  So as you ask, what happens if you do not have an event?  There still may be abnormal electrical activity detected that does not manifest a full seizures (interical activity), this is important to know as well.

Cannabis: Daniel Amen, MD does research on the brain and cannabis.  He finds differences in brains of those using cannabis.  Please be sure to tell your doc that you are using this substance because it can impact his/her reading of your results.  Peace and good health.

my son just got a eeg scan for an hour and it came back abnormal. then another eeg scan for 3 days which came back normal how often does that happen?

: Not feasible to answer your question in absence of clinical data, and the specific abnormalities on the initial EEG.  The 3-day apparently ambulatory study should be the more thorough outcome, and if totally normal should be reassuring.  The salient question to ask your doctor is the diagnosis and recommended next steps.

my neuro says my 10 hour eeg test was useless because i did not sleep however i had my episode during those 10 hours, why would he say this? i thought the point of eeg was to catch an episode on recording to see if activity is abnormal or not??

: A study that evaluates the different brain wave patterns (there are several) that occurs during sleep &amp; the possible contribution of those states to disordered brain electrical activity is incomplete if sleep does not occur. He may consider it an poor study because the patterns could not be assessed. It would be worth more if it they  were. Worthless is a matter of perspective.

how many hours of sleep should i have before the night before an eeg?

It depends: It depends on why you're having an EEG. You should ask the physician who ordered the EEG or the office where it will be performed regarding how sleep-deprived you should be. The general rule of thumb is that sleeping for less than your routine sleep duration may increase the chances of detecting abnormalities, if they exist. i just had a 24 hour eeg, i had to leave early because of a family emergency, but we got 10 hours of recording in. i also had an episode on recording but i forgot to click the button and tell the drs, if its normal is 10 hours enough to rule out?

: If you had an event in that 10 hour test and the abnormal rhythm was recorded, it can confirm (rule in) the diagnosis. However, if you had an event but the abnormal rhythm was not detected, the suspected rhythm abnormality can't be ruled out.

EEG: Having an eeg is painless and safe. Eeg's are not known to cause headaches.  The cause of your headache is most likely not from an eeg.

what is the diagnostic yield for a 24hour eeg? what % of epileptics have normal 24 hour eegs? or is this is a good argument against epilepsy?

: Longtime EEG’s can be inpatient videos over 2 or 3 days or ambulatory over 72- 96 hrs.  24 hrs is likely a bit too brief to be definitive

my daughter recently had an eeg done. i am still awaiting results. i noticed constant xl spikes about every 30-60 seconds, sometimes faster. this went on for 3 hours while she slept. is this indicative of seizure activity? or normal? abnormal?

: Repetitive XL spikes on an EEG are usually indicative of a seizure disorder. However the neurologist involved in your daughter's care is by far the best person to advise you and answer your questions.

Yes, but...: There are eeg changes associated with obstructive sleep apnea, but to completely diagnose osa and know what is needed to treat it, you need to be monitoring oxygen levels while sleeping.
