i have an aching pain on both flanks which moved to the centre of my abdomen. the pain is sharp. i had an ultrasound and they found a 1cm and 1.4 cm simple cyst on my kidney. the pain has been there for 3 weeks now with no relief. what could be wrong?

Flank pain : Constipated? would do  CT of the abdomen and pelvis , and look for appendicitis - you can have chronic appendicitis, as well as  colon, if  female check a pregnancy test before the CT but look for ovarian /uterine pathology  as  it may not be well seen on ultrasound. Also  check for pancreas, liver ,gallbladder ( which can be seen well on ultrasound if they looked at it. f/u /w/ MD

stupid question. my renal sonographer reported my complex renal kidney cyst as 4.7 x 5.2 cm. what is it's size in cm? i see online that cysts dimensions are reported as one number--1cm, 4cm?

: If they find an oval cyst they woulsd report the length and width as separate numbers and let the doc decide its importance.

had abd ct/urogram on tues for a follow up of a simple kidney cyst on repeat ultrasounds. ct showed right upper pole cyst measuring 3.2  2.3 cm right renal simple cyst (bosniak category one). is this concerning? will i need follow up?

: A Bosniak  Category 1 cyst is ty[ically not cancerous and so does not need follow-up. However, there was a physician who ordered the CT scan/Urogram and you should follow-up with that physician and discuss what follow-up is necessary. What you are reporting to me may not be all that is seen in your scans.

Atypical v simple: Simple cyst is a sac that contains clear liquid. It is usually benign. Atypical means non-typical. The contents here are not clear. It may contain old blood, fatty tissues, or solid tissue. We worry about possibility of solid tissue because it may be cancerous; hence, the follow up ultrasound which is designed to detect growth in order to allow for prompt intervention if needed.

Accepted Answer

It is harmless: Cysts in the kidneys are very common. They are benign and therefore do not require regular follow up. Your cyst has grown some small amount but it is of no consequence. Unless you have some symptoms you do not need and regular follow up at least no sooner than every 2-3 years, that too if you have symptoms.

Difficult situation: Us are quick but less specific with their findings, mri's are quite specific but take time and usually require sedation/anesthesia . Either  should be looked at in the context of the problem being studied. Either and or both can be used to follow a problem.Decide which doc you are more comfortable with and follow his/her advice, but continue to ask questions.

is polycystic kidney disease comes in urine test at an very early stage or not...?i don't have history of pckd but have one simple kidney cyst...my urine test is normal..?

: There is no urine test for PKD. It is diagnosed by a radiological testing

Anytime: Kidney cyst can already be present at birth, develop in childhood or as an adult. A simple kidney cyst is very common, in fact present in up to 1 in every 3 humans ; usually require no treatment unless they become symptomatic.

None: Usually no symptoms at all. Incidental finding in ultrasound. When they are very large may feel some discomfort in the flank area.

Accepted Answer

Surveillance: Complex kidney cyst should be followed by serial ultrasounds.Most of the cysts remain unchanged, however  some may either increase or decrease in size. Complex cysts must be followed by serial imaging.
