Genital herpes: Although there are two types of herpetic infection, both can be on oral or genital membranes, and herpes I and II are very contagious. Herpes is extremely common among persons with multiple partners, and treatment will make the duration of symptoms shorter, but not prevent new eruptions of ulcers. Treatment with acyclovir or valcyclovir on first symptom occurrence shortens duration.

Possible: You’re aware that you’re contagious in the genital area, so a physical barrier like a condom is recommended going forward. The virus exists in the blood, so if you had an open sore in your mouth or a tiny cut (from brushing teeth), it’s possible (however unlikely) to infect a partner with genital herpes during oral sex (say, if your partner also had a cut or through the opening of the penis).
