Stage of disease: Primary syphilis is characterized by the chancre, a firm based ulcer which is not tender. Neurological involvement occurs after the spirochaete disseminates through the blood stream and can appear as meninigoencephalitis in secondary syphilis or in late stage syphilis it may manifest as permanent brain impairment with many symptoms and signs.
