A member asked:

What is the difference between chancres and syphilis?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Stage of disease: A chancre is the initial lesion at the point where the syphilis bacterium first entered the body. Usually it's a painless ulcer that feels hard. Syphilis is the disease caused by infection with the bacterium t pallidum; it's still around and is serious. Chancroid by contrast is a different disease, more uncomfortable but far less serious.
