Direct contact: Hpv is acquired by direct contact with the virus from somebody else who also has it.

Different strains: There are lots of different hpv strains. The ones that are sexually transmitted, which cause cervical and penile cancer, don't cause warts on someone's hand. There are strains that aren't STDs which do cause warts on the hand and are transmitted just through skin to skin contact. They are all very contagious.
