No care = much worse: I assume you're asking about psychotherapy with a psychiatry resident (a doctor training in the specialty of psychiatry). Not only are most residents already fully licensed mds, they are also supervised by senior physicians in their training clinics and hospitals. While more experience is generally better, a resident is much better than nothing! i've worked with some excellent residents.

Getting care =better: No receiving care is much worse than receiving care. I'm not sure what you mean by resident therapy -- therapy with a resident (someone who is in training and is usually supervised) or treatment facility? There are in-patient treatment in psychiatric hospital, partial hospital programs and intensive outpatient programs where you stay part of the day. Insurance usually covers these services.
