Managed, but ...: Depression is best thought of as a chronic illness with recurrent episodes that are separated by periods of remission. For many, a depressive episode will go into remission on it's own, but will take 9-24 months to do so. Treatment of depression helps shorten episodes and lengthen periods of remission. Depression may not recur if the diagnosis was adjustment disorder. Hope this helps.
