A member asked:

In a ultrasound what does the dilation of the right renal pelvis mean?

Dilatation: A dilated renal pelvis means that structure #6 in the attached picture is dilated. This is where the urine collects before entering the ureter and heading to the bladder. Dilatation can be normal in some people, especially if the rest of the system is not dilated.

Draining urine: As the kidney makes urine, the urine drains out of the kidney through small ducts that meet at the point where the arteries and veins enter the kidney, this is called the hilus. The renal pelvis is the part of the urinary collecting system within the hilus just before forming the ureter. A dilated pelvis can be normal if you are making lots or urine or it could be from a downstream obstruction.
