Several things: If it has been present for a long time and not painful, it could an asymmetry of the bone caused by extra bone or a tooth. Swelling of the gums can also be due to an infection caused by a tooth, or a periodontal problem. Another possibility could be due to a cyst or other pathology. A clinical exam with the appropriate x-rays by a dentist would be recommended for a more definitive answer.
