Inflammation: Something may be caught in there. It could be food, but more likely calculus. Calculus is hardened bacteria that needs to be scraped off by a dentist or hygienist. Failure to do so can result in an abscess, bone loss, gum diease, and finally loss of the tooth. Call your dentist for an appointment.

Red swollen gums: Red swollen gums means at least inflammation if not infection. Cause can range from slight due to inadequate brushing and flossing and plaque accumulation to more serious gum and tooth problems. Best to see your own dentist asap for evaluation.
