Usually but!: Gout usually recurrent - that is it comes back. Sometimes it does snot return for a long time - so we usually treat people who get recurrent gout. In the original framingham study some patients did not get a recurrent episode after even 14 years. It is important to remember that gout can be a symptom of something else, so that all people with gout need an evaluation to clarify why.

Depends on uric acid: The frequency of gout flares is proportional to the concentration of uric acid in the blood test. If uric acid is 10, gout will surely return within a year. If it is lowered below 6, flares probably will stop within months.
