People who get gout: Have a difficult time processing purine-rich foods. There's a long list of such food available, most commonly shellfish, beer/red wine, organ meat, legumes, smoked fish and more. Usually there's an event--consuming a fairly large portion of these foods that triggers the acute arthritic attack. Less commonly , it can be a result of dehydration associates with diuretics taken for blood pressure.

Overweight, others: A study published this week suggests that the increase in gout over the last 5 years is due to the increase in overweight in the us. High uric acid for years or decades due to diet (alcohol, meat, fructose, etc) causes gout. Other causes include medicines, some diseases, and genetics.
